All hail the empowered heroine. In a world largely dominated by the male super hero, there has been an unmistakable move by developers to bring some semblance of balance of late. In Robyn, Genesis Gaming has produced a visually appealing adaptation to history and mystical fairytales. Robyn is a dab hand with the Bow and Arrow, which may remind you of someone of a similar name, and it is this skill which forms the thrust of the game.
Game Play
Robyn has 5 reels and 243 ways to win, but you’ve have heard that all before. Spin values vary from .25 to 125 coins but be aware that all paylines are in play, they are not selectable. The premise is you must aid Robyn in her quest to avenge the evil queen (who actually doesn’t look too evil) and who has pillaged her village. Do queens pillage? No matter. Robyn has been relieved of her property and she wants it back. Symbols range from the standard 9-Ace cards for the low value with increasing rewards for the main characters including the Queen, the Prince Robyn’s horse and Robyn herself.
Throughout game play you will see targets appear on the reels and at this point, Robyn will appear from the bottom right of your screen and shoot an arrow at it. The result is the target will change to a random symbol. Be warned though, a win is not guaranteed, which does rather beg the question as to what the purpose of the feature is? Wilds in the game are self evident– you just need to be able to read. Robyn herself is your scatter symbol.
Free Spins and Bonus
Land 3 Robyn symbols anywhere on the reels and you will be awarded a mandatory 12 free spins. Simple. In free spins your target symbol will no longer randomly turn into an alternate symbol and instead become wild, at least thus doing something to uplift your winning potential. Free Spins can be re-triggered at any point in the process and thus extend your returns. Truthfully though this is not enough to qualify as a Bonus feature, just a plus. There is no second screen bonus.
Summary
Robyn is, as we started out by saying, a visually appealing, graphically advanced offering. As we reported on Oct. 11th, it was impressive that Genesis Gaming released the slot in both Flash and HTML 5 versions at the same time. It looks pretty, but sadly it seems the substance is somewhat lacking. Ultimately an online slot needs to reward with sufficient regularity and in our playing experience, the rewards were lackluster. There is a market for low variance slots and there will be players who enjoy Robyn for what it is. But those looking for more adrenaline from their gaming, will likely look at other options.
